The reason is simple—fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories due to their high water and fiber content. This combination adds volume to meals, allowing you to eat the same amount of food while consuming fewer calories. The fiber in fruits and vegetables helps you feel satiated, making it easier to eat less and manage weight effectively.
What is Fiber?
Dietary fiber is a type of carbohydrate found mainly in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Each of these food groups contains varying amounts of dietary fiber.

A 2024 report by the Global Food Policy revealed that half of the population snacks more often than they eat regular meals. Unfortunately, popular snack choices include samosas, pakoras, bhujias, vada pav, cakes, cookies, and other deep-fried, salty, and sugary treats. While delicious and comforting, these snacks contribute to weight gain, high cholesterol, and other health issues.
These snacks are often:
- Deep-fried
- Made with refined sugar & flours
- High in sodium & trans fats
- Low or completely devoid of fiber
Because they lack fiber and are high in calories, they don't provide a feeling of fullness, leading to overeating. Additionally, they increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Swap Unhealthy Snacks for Healthier Alternatives
To maintain a healthy weight, it’s essential to replace unhealthy snacks with nutrient-dense, fiber-rich foods like fruits, nuts, seeds, and whole-food-based snacks. If you have a sweet tooth, opt for dried fruits like apricots, prunes, blueberries, mulberries, and dates.
Among dried fruits, dates stand out as a delicious and healthy alternative to processed snacks. Swapping junk food for dates can help curb hunger and control cravings.
But Dates Contain Sugar—Can I Still Eat Them?
Yes! While dates contain natural sugar, they are also rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential minerals. This makes them a better alternative to processed sugar-laden snacks.
However, moderation is key. Like all dried fruits, consuming too many dates can add extra calories, which may not be ideal for those on a low-sugar diet. Eating them in controlled portions helps maintain a balance.
Essential Tip: Pair dates with a healthy fat & protein source like almonds, peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds and other seeds to make it a nutritious balanced snack. This will also give you a steady blood sugar level.
Use them in different ways
Apart from just being rich in fiber, dates are high in antioxidants and contain a good amount of many different minerals and amino acids.
